  39. I am pleased to announce the availability of release 1.0 of the NetBSD
  40. operating system, a freely available and redistributable BSD system
  41. that runs on a variety of hardware platforms.  NetBSD 1.0 is based on
  42. 4.4BSD Lite and Berkeley Networking Release 2 sources.  It includes
  43. support for shared libraries on most architectures, the enhanced
  44. Berkeley Fast File System (which supports 64-bit file sizes and
  45. clustering), rock-solid networking code, and a fair amount of binary
  46. compatibility with other operating systems.  A list of significant
  47. changes since the last release is present in the "CHANGES" file in the
  48. distribution.  The list is far too long to include here.

  50. Release 1.0 of the NetBSD operating system is distributed with complete
  51. source code and is available from the distribution sites listed
  52. at the bottom of this message.  At this time, binary releases for the
  53. following architectures are available:
  54.     Amigas
  55.     i386-family PCs
  56.     some m68k-based Macintoshes
  57.     PC532
  58.     SPARCstation (sun4c) -class machines
  59.  
  60. In addition, a binary release is expected, but not yet ready, for the
  61. HP9000/300 family of workstations.  Though the NetBSD 1.0 source tree
  62. includes support for DECstations, some Sun 3 models, and some VAXen,
  63. those ports are not far enough along to merit a complete binary
  64. distribution.

  66. Within the next few days, installation and release notes for each of
  67. the ports mentioned above will be posted to the appropriate mailing
  68. lists and/or newsgroups for those ports.  If those notes don't answer
  69. any questions you might have about NetBSD, you should probably
  70. subscribe to one of more of the NetBSD mailing lists, and ask there.
  71. For information on what lists are available and how to subscribe,
  72. mail majordomo@NetBSD.ORG with an empty message body.
